Why Speech Therapy?

Speech and Language Therapy involves the diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment of communication disorders.  The development of communication skills begins at birth before the emergence of the first word. This development can have a significant effect on the child’s social, academic skills and behavior. Early speech and language intervention can help children be more successful with language, reading, writing, schoolwork and interpersonal relationships.  

Speech Therapy typically begins with an evaluation to determine skill level in receptive and expressive language skills, social/pragmatic skills, and/or articulation skills. Once the evaluation is complete, specific goals are created to meet each child’s needs based on the results of testing. Goals will be targeted in a one on one treatment session.

- If your child has difficulty with following or understanding directions

- If your child has difficulty expressing basic wants and needs

What is ABA?

Applied Behavior Analysis is a scientifically structured learning approach that focuses on the acquisition of socially significant skills while simultaneously decreasing maladaptive behaviors. ABA methods involve application of basic behavioral practices (positive reinforcement, repetition, and prompting) to facilitate the development of language, positive skills, and social behavior as well as to help reduce everyday social problems and serious behavior disorders.   

Data collected through hundreds of studies currently indicate that ABA is a highly effective method to teach children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and other developmental disabilities. 

Tested by research and experience for more than 35 years, ABA practices have been endorsed by the Surgeon General, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Association for Science in Autism Research. The skills and experience of an ABA professional are essential for successful treatment. Continuous and systematic evaluation of effectiveness is a fundamental component of the ABA methodology.

ABA can be used to teach a variety of skills and positive behaviors, including language, reading, social skills, positive peer support, academic engagement, functional living skills, and more. ABA methodology is also effective in decreasing inappropriate behaviors such as noncompliance, tantrums, bed-wetting, feeding problems, aggression, and self-injury.

When to Assess for Autism

The range and severity of symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorder can vary widely. Common symptoms include difficulty with communication, difficulty with social interactions, obsessive interests, and repetitive behaviors.

Children with autism may experience difficulties in the following areas:

Behavioral: inappropriate social interaction, poor eye contact, compulsive behavior, impulsivity, repetitive movements, self-harm, or persistent repetition of words or actions

Developmental: learning disability or speech delay in a child

Cognitive: intense interest in a limited number of things or problem paying attention

Psychological: unaware of others' emotions or depression

Also common: anxiety, change in voice, sensitivity to sound, or tic

The Importance of Early Intervention

Early intervention has proven to be crucial to the healthy development of toddlers and young children showing signs of autism and developmental delays. Early intervention focuses on helping the child learn the basic skills that typically develop during the first three years of life, such as: cognitive (thinking, learning, solving problems); communication (talking, listening, understanding); social/emotional (playing, feeling secure and happy); and self-help (eating, dressing). The sooner you can start working with a child, the better chance he or she has of reaching their potential in daily living.
